Cereal Review: Raisin Bran Cinnamon Almond is a Lie!

by Matt Clinks

When I saw that Kellogg’s released a new cereal on their Raisin Bran line, I was thrilled. As many of you know, I absolutely love cereal. It’s the best food on earth. Nothing is better than that great crunchy texture in a nice bowl of skim milk! One reason Raisin Bran stands out to me is it’s got all that fiber too.

Moving on, here is the new hotness:

Cinnamon Almond Raisin Bran! It claims to be Raisin Bran but with the addition of cinnamon and almonds. Here’s the breakdown:

Keep in mind, regular Raisin Bran has a 1cup serving size, whereas new Raisin Bran Cinnamon Almond(RBCA) has a higher 1 1/4 serving size…that’s dumb, but it makes you cringe even more when we breakdown these little facts.

  • They both have the same amount of sugar, a staggering 18g per serving(my least favorite stat.)
  • RBCA only has 5g of Fiber per serving as apposed to regular Raisin Bran that has 7g.
  • RBCA has 4g of protein per serving, as opposed to regular Raisin Bran’s 5g
  • RBCA has less Potassium and some other small differences, but those could be attributed to the slightly higher serving size.

Lastly, new Raisin Bran Cinnamon Almond fails in the taste category, and fails hard. Why, you ask? Because Kellogg’s has LIED TO US ALL! The new RBCA is simply a deconstructed version of this:

The key difference is in the flakes. I would argue that regular Raisin Bran has a very dense bran flake. Raisin Bran Crunch has a totally different flake. It is a crunchier, sweeter, bumpy, and almost “oat-ish” flake. Frankly, the change in flake taste like crap. Raisin Bran Crunch is a overly sweet, bad cereal with no embrace for it’s own flavor. On a positive note, the raisin’s used in Crunch aren’t covered in sugar like it’s namesake. I hope they actually carry this over to regular Raisin Bran at some point. Either way, Raisin Bran Crunch is a terrible misstep for Kellogg’s. I bring all this up because Raisin Bran Cinnamon Almond is actually just Raisin Bran Crunch’s healthier cousin.

You see the raisins and flakes used in RBCA are different than regular Raisin Bran and exactly the same as Raisin Bran Crunch. When it’s all said and done, what you’re getting when you buy RBCA is a streamlined Raisin Bran crunch, with almonds. If we lived in a vacuum, then this is a step forward, but regular Raisin Bran exists and is far superior. So save your money and stick with Raisin Bran. It’s got hearty flakes, is slightly better for you, and a fantastic taste that embraces it’s subtleness and invites the milk to come play!

Two Scoops that taste too good!

Woo, I love cereal!
